This is the story of how Sew Patch n Quilt came to life…
Sewing has been a life long passion of mine…my earliest memory of sewing was making Barbie doll clothes out of men’s handkerchiefs during a school holiday break.
The patterns came out of the Australian Women’s Weekly, and of course, it was all handsewing. I remember sewing some red braid around the garments, and feeling pretty pleased with myself. From there, I graduated to my grandmother’s Singer sewing machine, to make my first dress at the age of 8. I still recall that dress vividly…I wonder whatever happened to it, I probably wore it to death! Sewing was in my blood, and I spent many hours at the machine, or hand sewing in some form or another (although I don’t have the time for hand sewing these days!).
I think I dabbled in every kind of sewing and fibre related craft throughout my teen years, exhibiting in local shows (successfully!) and topping the class in Home Management, as it was called then. I was always making something, whether it be from a pattern, or just making it up as I went along….my hands were never idle.
Over the years, I have done dressmaking for myself, friends and family, specialising in bridal wear for a while, until family came along. I was introduced to patchwork, some 30 years ago. My first ever attempt at patchwork was a double bed sized sampler quilt, all hand pieced. I never did get around to quilting that quilt, and I’m not quite sure where it has ended up now! Since then, I have progressed to machine piecing, as I am far too impatient to wait for a quilt to come together by hand! I have been very fortunate to have taken many lessons with some fantastic tutors, both national and international, such as the likes of Gloria Loughman, Ricky Tims, Jenny Bowker, Leissa Seigele, Rosalie Dace, Caroline Sharkey, Carol Waugh, Deborah Louie, Dawn Cameron-Dick, Debby Brown, Fiona Hammond, Susan Carlson, Melissa Sobotka and many, many more, with some of the highlights of my patchwork and quilting ‘career’ including attending the very first Birmingham Festival of Quilts in 2003 and the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2011 and 2016. I love to learn new and innovative techniques and am constantly looking to expand my skills.
An exciting achievement…
My greatest achievement so far was in 2017, winning Best in Show, First in Art Quilt class and Viewer’s Choice with my quilt, A Sunburnt Country, in the Quilts Across Queensland competition at the Royal Queensland Show, affectionately known as the ‘Ekka’. While this competition is really not an important one in the world of quilting, for me it was the pinnacle of my quilting career! I never dreamed that my quilt would have been so successful and to win Best of Show was momentous for me, particularly since A Sunburnt Country was the first quilt I had actually finished in a long time, and also my first attempt at art quilting. To say I am proud and absolutely delighted is definitely an understatement. There is quite a story to my quilt, and how it came to being…it was created as part of A Sunburnt Country Project and if you are interested, you can read more here.
Sew Patch n Quilt opens…
In 2013, an opportunity arose that I couldn’t pass up, and SEWPatchnQuilt opened. Here was the chance to immerse myself in my passion, and to pass that passion on to others. It was also the chance to provide the local community with all the tools needed to be a successful quilter. It also gives me the opportunity to give back to the community, through involvement with charity projects which are dear to my heart.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the helm of SEWPatchnQuilt, and can’t describe the pleasure I get when I see the passion for sewing, patchwork and quilting growing in others. How lucky I am to be working in a job where I get to do something I love! I love to see your completed projects and enjoy sharing your passion for beautiful fabric, made into gorgeous quilts. I hope to see you soon.
